Gwen reached the starting point on the island and dropped to the ground, tugging her boots tiredly from her feet and dropping them into her pack.

“Time is noted,” one of the aides said, marking it on a piece of parchment.

Gwen had passed Sa’dee and Chuck a while back and didn’t know where they were. Some others were only now just reaching the island to start their trek, while she was preparing for her trip back and the last leg of her trip before the extremely difficult exercise at the end.

“Your time is forty-two minutes, six seconds. You shaved a minute and twenty-eight seconds off yesterday’s run. Not bad.”

Gwen nodded as she hitched up her backpack and made for the water. Her pace had been a hair over five minutes per mile. Had she been fresh, she probably could have shaved a good thirty seconds per, even on the rough terrain of the jungle.

It might have seemed like a blistering pace to some, but for someone with her stats, it was to be expected. The top adult athletes wouldn’t be able to keep pace with her at this point if they were at rank 1, though in this day and age, the top athletes would definitely be higher ranked.

The longest part of the exercise was swimming due to the resistance, so Gwen plunged into the water and began her swim back. She reached the mainland and got her boots back on, then took the sprint back to the running track where Professor Dirk was waiting. Not a single student had been left on the mainland when she’d landed, which was a good thing. Otherwise, they’d be late to class, which as they’d been told on their first day, was grounds for expulsion.

“Alright,” Dirk said, giving her a once-over. “Let’s get that bar up in the air. Arms locked out straight. Then I want a sprint down the straightaway. You need to hit the mark in fifty seconds or less, otherwise you need to do it over.”

Gwen nodded, dropping her knapsack and hoisting the heavy barbell up over her head. It unbalanced her, which was likely the point. Had she not had to carry it, she could easily have made the sprint in about half that time. She’d missed her mark yesterday and had to do it over twice. She wasn’t planning on holding back today.

The chain was still wrapped around her shoulders and chest, but the others had been left off. With her arms feeling like jelly, Gwen dug in her heels, then took off as fast as she could. The weights clanked and clattered as she jolted them, feeling her muscles screaming as the impact forced them to work hard to keep the weight up high.

“Come on, you’re flagging!” Dirk yelled, looking down at his timer construct.

Gwen’s lungs burned and she felt sick to her stomach. Still, she dug deep and forced what little strength she had left into a final burst of energy, flashing across the finish line with seconds to spare.
